Stephen Mc Donald (or Mac to his friends), is an experienced and award winning professional photographer. Born and raised in Birmingham, he expressed an early interest in photography when at a young age he would spend hours leafing through old editions of National Geographic magazine. Amazed and fascinated by the vivid pictures and the intensity and depth that could be conveyed of other places and other worlds by a single snapshot.

Stephen maintained this interest throughout his youth and into early adulthood. At the age of sixteen, and against the advice of others, he decided to pursue his passion professionally and enrolled on to a design and photography course, eventually progressing on to University where he graduated with BA (Hons).

During his final year at university Stephen travelled to India and in particular the region of Karnataka. Here he found inspiration among the indigenous people and produced a series of images focussing on their daily lives; capturing the essence of both the people and the environment. The experience cemented Stephen's desire to pursue his ambition as a photographer, and furthermore, provided the catalyst for the development of his own style, ‘artistic realism’, which has become the trademark of his work.

With his desire to travel piqued, Stephen took up his camera and began working professionally; first for the prestigious Royal Caribbean International cruise line based in Miami, and later, for the Princess cruise line based out of Galveston, Barcelona, Rome and Venice. This enabled him to continue developing his photographic skills, whilst also embarking on what is becoming a lifelong journey, visiting many of the worlds most beautiful and exotic destinations. Stephen has combined his love of travel and photography with an interest in documenting the cultures and daily lives of the people he has encountered en route. By doing so Stephen has created his own unique and vivid style and an impressive ever growing portfolio.

To date Stephen's work has been published on several occasions in the respected British Journal of Photography, he has also exhibited at the prestigious London Salon of Photography, and featured in several exhibitions including, ‘Focus On Imaging’ at the NEC in Birmingham. He has also achieved several awards most notably Licentiateship and Associateship distinctions for his travel portfolios through the prestigious Royal Photographic Society, and a London Salon of Photography winner’s medal for the image ‘Wheelchair, Fez’ taken in 2009.

When he is not hiking through deserts with Bedouin's, avoiding rampaging cows in Jaipur, clambering through dense far eastern jungles to access remote temples or befriending snake charmers in the Hindu Kush, Stephen lives in Birmingham, England.
